Collection Description: A Morris Tapestry reproduces the graceful patterns of William Morris and his design partner John Henry Dearle. Their Morris & Company created the design revolution known as Arts & Crafts style at the end of the nineteenth century. Morris and Dearle’s printed fabrics were often inspired by woven tapestry design, handcraft surviving from centuries before the advent of factory-made cloth. The “strawberry Thief”, picturing a thrush stealing fruit from the garden, was first designed as a tapestry and several of the other prints originated as textured damask.
